Stevia

We are taking off on an experiment into Stevia here at the house. It is fueled in part by a need to better control blood sugar for one member of the house. I think that from now on I will blog about the supplements we give a trial run. Think zero calories and sweet without a glycemic index at all. Interesting. Apparently it also has some effect on blood pressure as well and the girls are hinting I should try it out as well. I may as well, but I don't really look for it to make any difference as it would take me over a year to go through a whole 1 pound bag of sugar anyway.

  1. I have some and have used it a little. It is expensive and I have not tried to figure out how to use it. I'll be interested in how it works for you.

  2. I like to use SweetLeaf brand of stevia--a rather pure brand. I don't know what brand you chose, but make sure your brand doesn't have additives, or the glycemic index will most likely not be 0 anymore (and perhaps the carbs won't be 0 either). BTW, I think what you were thinking is that pure stevia can lower high blood pressure without affecting normal or low blood pressure, which I understand is true. Just know the wonderful benefits of stevia would be largely eliminated or reduced with additives like maltodextrin, dextrose, other forms of sugar, or perhaps sugar alcohols. I hope you like it--whatever brand it is, I'm sure it's much healthier than the artificial sweeteners! Good luck!
